Jason Van Dyke, a white Chicago police officer, was found guilty of second-degree murder Oct. 5, nearly four years after he shot and killed LaQuan McDonald,a black 17-year-old holding a knife.

Thirteen months after the shooting on Nov. 24, 2015,police released a dash cam video of the shooting. The footage showed McDonald had been walking away from the police when he was shot. That same day, Officer Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder and initially held without bail at the Cook County Jail.He was released on bail on Nov. 30. The city reached a settlement with McDonald’s family. On October 5, 2018, Van Dyke was found guilty at trial of a second-degree murder, as well as 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.

According to Nicole Austin-Hillery from The Washington Post, “What happened in Chicago was a fulfillment of the American promise: that when injustice is done, justice will be served. Far too often Americans have watched unarmed black men and women killed by police officers who rarely even faced indictment, let alone a guilty verdict at the end of a trial.”

On Debate.org, many online posters argued whether Dyke was guilty or not. Sixty-five percent of people say yes he was guilty and 35% said he was not guilty.
