The first ever transgender doll came to the public eye for the first time on Feb. 22, 2017. This transgender doll was inspired by a real life person: Jazz Jennings who is an American YouTube personality, spokesmodel, television personality and LGBTQ rights activist, and is just 16 years old. The doll will be released in July 2017. This act is truly shocking to many people, but it is good that our society is finally becoming accepting of transgender people.
On February 22, 2017, Tonner Doll Company released a visual of a new transgender doll that was inspired by Jazz Jennings. Robert Tonner, who designed the doll and is the founder of the company, was inspired to make this doll because he believes that Jennings is a big inspiration to the LGBTQ community. Tonner, who did an interview with Pix11 news said, “Jazz stands for everything I respect from a human nature point of view. She’s incredibly brave, intelligent, warm-hearted and creative,” said Tonner. Throughout the years, it has been very difficult for the LGBTQ community to feel accepted in our society; with this act it has become evident that our society is trying to form a better community for the LGBTQ. This new doll will make a big impact to everyone around the world, because it’s showing people that it’s time for a change in not only toys for kids but also in our society.
At Round Lake High School, Senior Doriana Rivera thinks that having a transgender doll is an amazing idea because it shows that our society is changing in a good way. “I really believe that having a transgender doll is great for the transgender community, especially during times that they are being targeted by the media,” she said. “I love how the doll just looks like any other regular doll which emphasizes the fact that transgender people are exactly like any other female or male and should be accepted by everyone because they are equal to everyone else and there is no difference.”
In a recent interview, Jennings described her childhood and how much dolls meant to her in terms of defining her identity and showing her parents what she was interested in. “Ever since I was little, I always loved playing with dolls,” she said. “It was a great way to show my parents that I was a girl, because I could just express myself as I am. So this really resonates with me, because it was something so pivotal in my own journey.” The impact that this doll will have, will hopefully make a change in the world and people will have a different perspective on the LGBTQ community.
Our society is becoming more supportive towards LGBTQ people and it’s better for our society and to everyone around the world. Not only does our society need to start accepting the LGBTQ community, they also have to embrace everything they get and with this doll hopefully people’s minds will start to change for the better.
